Earth Hero Button 2022

Every year, Pacific Beach Coalition honors a native species under the title: Habitat Hero. On Earth Day, the organization will go public with 2022’s Habitat Hero, the Mission Blue Butterfly. It’s an endangered species that can be found around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Design a button that will be worn by hundreds of PBC volunteers during the organization’s Earth Day events. This button should be stylistically similar to buttons created in the past by other team members. Include the organization’s name, the year, “Earth Hero”, and a unique illustration.

Typography
A rounded, sans serif was chosen since that was the typography established for buttons created in the past.
Color Palette
Color palette created based on coloration of the “habitat hero” being represented. Light, bright tones were chosen to increase contrast between the button and the clothing of the wearer.
Graphics
The illustration used in this button design was completely created by me, drawn based on a reference photograph of a real Mission Blue Butterfly.
Design Iterations
Light and dark versions of the button design were created because some PBC team members raised concerns about contrast issues that may come up once in production. Eventually, the team voted to proceed with the lighter version design.
