One Million Cigarette Butts
Pacific Beach Coalition
-
Since its creation, Pacific Beach Coalition has been dedicated to preserving the ocean, coastal habitat, and wildlife, and ending litter through advocacy, education, community building, and citizen action. Various programs encourage the collection of cigarette butts from the coastline so that they may be recycled and toxins removed from the ecosystem.
Create a graphic that will be sent out to all participating members of PBC to inform them of the organization’s milestone. This as an opportunity to both educate the public and thank them for their contribution. Although it is a major accomplishment, the tone of the graphic reflects the seriousness of the ongoing threat to coastal wildlife.

Typography
Final typographic choices were made based on the organization’s established branding and expectations for the project. A sans serif typeface with bold letterforms best addressed the need for legibility.
Color Palette
Color palette created based on coloration of a cigarette. Dark tones were chosen to increase contrast between text, image, and convey the air of seriousness of the situation.

Design Iterations
The initial infographic mockups were created with PBC’s established brand colors in mind. After much consideration, the communications team felt that although collecting over one million cigarettes is a significant milestone that should be celebrated, it is also a startling statistic about the state of our environment. The final design was made to reflect the unfortunate side of this accomplishment.
